About University

Azim Premji University is a non-profit private university situated in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. It was established in 2010 through the Azim Premji University Act and is recognized by the University Grants Commission under Section 2F. The university aims to offer postgraduate and undergraduate programs, along with several short-term diplomas and certificate courses. Its objective is to run teaching programs and conduct research to contribute to the social sector in India.

In 2023, a second campus in Bhopal was inaugurated, allowing the university to expand its reach even further. The Azim Premji Foundation established the university, and it is financially supported by the foundation, with 90% of the expenditure being borne by it. The foundation endowment is designed to support 80% of the overall expenditure of the university in the long term, while the remaining 20% comes from program fees and other income.

The foundation started its work in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh in 2001, where the state leadership and education departments were supportive of its mandate. Azim Premji’s funding objective was to facilitate the universalization of primary education rather than serve as a constraint in achieving it. The university has plans to open two more campuses, one in the northeast and another in the eastern region, to further its philanthropic goals.
